He's managed to get a grand in less than a day? Fucking sweet!
I'm going to try and chip in as soon as I can. And that means tomorrow (if he hasn't met his goal already) because tomorrow's payday.

Did they not have [comprehensive] insurance? and if not, were they not planning that one day they would need to replace said car? I mean, I like RCR, I like helping people...but does he really not have the funds for a replacement in the event of a disaster? and if so...why not insure it for loss? I hope he gets what he needs and all, but this seems weird.

Uhhh, doesn't he make thousands a month in ad revenue with their current viewership? And shouldn't he be getting an insurance check since they'll probably rule that totaled? He could buy a good sub-100k mile 2002 Echo for $5k. This seems a little disingenuous.

It's possible he only got liability insurance on it. That's all you need, at least in California, but it won't pay for your car.

I sent him 4 bucks, it's not much but I hope it'll help.

I say stop the cynical-ism and donate. I did. I love this show and the ten dollars I contributed is a petty sum compared to the laughs this show gives me.

He has so far gotten a total of 600$ total from youtube, he only has liability insurance, and from what I can tell is that he literally couldn't afford that sub 5k echo. And in order to be able to get a new car he wouldn't be able to spend time/money making new videos for a long long time.

That's obviously what he's done and I certainly don't blame anyone for doing that when your car reaches a certain value....but the rule is that if you go liability only, you need to be investing what you save into a replacement car fund, or have cash on hand to cover the loss. Not doing either is, in my opinion, financially reckless. hope for the best plan for the worst kind of thing. At the very least he had to have been thinking "hmmm, what am I going to do when I have to drop $x on major repairs that this car will need eventually, or with what money will I draw from to replace it when the cost of repairs no longer make sense financially?"

Probably just the 'hit anything else, it's covered' insurance. I drive car into ditch, I pay for car. I drive car into BMW, insurance pays for BMW, I'm just screwed...
..Just looked at the other video. Um, it's drivable.. just find somebody to Mad-Max it out and he's set. Put some extra camera mounts up front while they're at it. Lemons parade car. All of the above.

We've already been over this earlier on Jalopnik ...
A ten year-old Toyota Echo with 130,000 miles isn't likely to have full-coverage. With liability insurance, no one cuts you a check when you total your car. Because of that, you actually never turn it in to your insurance. I've been there first hand when I was 17 and I totaled my '98 S10.
Why would you depend on the income from a You Tube channel that could go bust any day, especially one that — let's just face the cut-and-dry truth here — doesn't have very mainstream or easily accessible content? It's a wonder RCR are even You Tube partners.
Did you listen to the Smoking Tire podcast with RCR? These are dudes buried up to their eyeballs in student loan debt. They don't even break even on these videos.

So special treatment is acceptable? Is he unable to get a car loan? Because banks are tripping over themselves to give car loans at the moment.
People can donate if they want. No judgement on those giving, but I do wonder about those receiving.

They should get a Miata

It's not the smartest thing to do, but how much is a 2002 Echo with 150k miles worth, a couple grand? I probably would have gone the cheap route too.
Nobody is in a situation to judge him for it, maybe he had a plan and something happened that affected his financial situation. The last thing most people think about is getting better car insurance. I don't think the guy was/is flush with cash, as he is after all driving a '02 Echo with nearly 200k miles and the other guy he does RCR with doesn't even have a car.

not judging, but it does seem strange that he didn't have a plan. Seems like a big risk to take.

The only people making thousands a month on youtube are the people with millions of *faithful* subscribers. If you get a check from youtube at all (which doesn't happen until you earn $100) you're doing pretty good.

Honestly, most people are extremely financially irresponsible. Broke kids with lots of debt and no plan for what would happen in the unlikely event their car is wrecked doesn't surprise me at all.
Being broke is risky in general, because if you can't afford insurance you definitely can't afford not to have it.

Perhaps someone can donate a regular car to them?

Update: He's almost at $5K! only like $200 to go!
I chipped in with $10. not much, but it's the best I could do :)
